COHAN, GEORGE M. Hall of Fame (George Michael Cohan) Born: 1878 Providence, RI Died: 1942 New York, NY Date of birth July 3, not July 4 as promoted. From the vaudeville act of "The Four Cohans", he became writer, producer, director and star of Broadway shows. Particular emphasis on patriotic songs; received Congressional Medal of Honor. Screen biography "Yankee Doodle Dandy" with James Cagney as Cohan. Biographical Broadway show "George M" in 1999 starred Joel Grey in the title role. Cohan in Rodgers & Hart musical "I'd Rather Be Right" in role of President, also in film "The Phantom President".
