By using the search engine in SongDex, you can access the vital information on more than 50,000 songs written between 1920 and 1960.
Help Menu: Search by Song Title | Search by Songwriter | Search by Year | Search by Production | Search by Other Information
Enter all or part of the song title. A list of matches will display. Click on the song title to see the detailed information on the song. Sample song information page. This search searches three separate fields in the SongDex database:
1. the song title (the primary title);
2. the extended title (information that precedes or extends a song title, such as "If I Knew You Were Comin'" for the song "I'dve Baked A Cake;" and
3. the alternate titles (such as "In Other Words," which was the original title of "Fly Me To The Moon")By entering one word in this search field, you will receive a display of all songs containing the word entered. For example, a search for the word "love" will return thousands of songs that include the word "love" in the title.
Enter all or part of the songwriter's name, and you will see a match list. Choose the songwriter of interest, and detailed information for that songwriter will display, including hyperlinks to each song written by the songwriter. Songwriter searched may be limited to searches for lyricists only, composers only, or songwriters who wrote both the words and music.
By selecting "Search by Year" and typing in the four digit year, you can see a list of all songs written or copyrighted in that year.
By entering all or part of the name of any film, show, or other production, you will receive a match list. When you choose the production of interest, all songs from the production will display, with hyperlinks to the detail for each song and the songwriters for each song.
Trivia and miscellaneous information is still being compiled for the songs and songwriters in SongDex. This information may include those who introduced the song, or who had prominent recordings, or information about the production source, or other interesting historical facts. When complete, an additional search field will be provided that will enable the keywords in the "Other Information" field to be searched.
Future Plans
When time permits, we hope to add licensing information for each song. This will indicate whether the composition is licensed by ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC, or is in the Public Domain.
